Root Canals

A root canal has a worse reputation than it deserves. Today it's a comfortable, routine way to relieve pain and save a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

What it is

When the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed — often from deep decay or a crack — it can cause significant pain. A root canal gently removes the infected tissue, disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it.

Saving your natural tooth this way preserves your bite and your smile. The tooth is usually protected with a crown afterward.

What to expect

  1. 1

    Relief first

We numb the tooth thoroughly so you're comfortable. For most patients, the procedure feels much like having a filling.

  2. 2

    Careful cleaning

We remove the infected tissue, clean and disinfect the canals, and seal the tooth.

  3. 3

    Protecting the tooth

We'll usually recommend a crown afterward to keep the restored tooth strong.

Your comfort comes first

We know this is the treatment people fear most — so we go out of our way to keep it gentle. You'll be fully numb, and we'll check in constantly. Most patients are relieved by how comfortable it is.

Common questions

Does a root canal hurt?

With modern anesthetic, a root canal is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. In fact, it relieves the pain caused by the infection. We make sure you're fully numb before we begin.

Can I get same-day care for tooth pain?
